Honeycomb gives you a query surface over your traces and trusts you to drive. Greenslope is opinion-forward — we present answers, not a canvas. Pick based on which shape of tool your team will actually use.
This page is a positioning narrative, not a feature matrix. It should help you self-select — the right customers pick Greenslope, the right customers pick Honeycomb, both leave respecting the other.
Honeycomb, on its own terms.
Honeycomb pioneered a category: event-based, high-cardinality trace analysis driven by a flexible query surface. BubbleUp, SLOs, and their tracing experience are genuinely excellent. For teams that know what questions to ask of their data, Honeycomb lets them ask those questions faster than any other tool.
Its centre of gravity is the expert user: someone who wants to slice trace attributes, compare dimensions, and derive insight from their own investigation.
When we'd tell you to pick Honeycomb.
We'd rather you pick the right tool and trust us than adopt Greenslope for a job it isn't the right shape for.
- You have engineers who enjoy writing queries and slicing trace data by high-cardinality attributes.
- You want a tool that gets out of the way so you can drive the investigation.
- Your team has SRE or observability expertise — you know what questions to ask.
- Honeycomb's derived-columns and BubbleUp fit the way your team likes to investigate.
- You want to write and iterate on your own SLOs with precise queries behind them.
When Greenslope is the better shape of tool.
Greenslope is Auto-SRE for small, shipping-fast engineering teams. If this is you, keep reading.
- You want the tool to offer the answer and the evidence, not a canvas to investigate from.
- Your team is small and won't build a team-wide query practice.
- You'd rather accept a proposed SLO and tweak it than draft one from a distribution query.
- The alert → triage → rollback → postmortem loop is your primary workflow, and you want it closed.
- "Auto-SRE" — opinionated reliability practice generated from your data — is closer to what you wanted than "your data, a query surface, and discipline".
Non-goals — on purpose.
Every product is a set of choices. Here's what we've deliberately decided not to compete on.
Query flexibility
Honeycomb's query surface is a feature, not a bug. We deliberately don't offer an infinite-depth ad-hoc query UI — that's their space.
Derived columns and BubbleUp
Honeycomb-native primitives we don't try to replicate. If those are your workflow, they're a reason to stay on Honeycomb.
Expert-user workflows
We optimise for the engineer on-call at 3am who wants the answer, not the engineer Tuesday afternoon who wants to explore data.
They aren't always either/or.
Rare, but occasionally. A team might keep Honeycomb for deep trace investigation and add Greenslope for the incident-loop and release-attribution workflow that Honeycomb doesn’t emphasise. Over time most teams pick one philosophy and stay.
If your team is made up of people who enjoy querying their own data, Honeycomb is likely the right call. If they would rather the tool drive, try Greenslope.
